Improving quality of life for old and young
Imagine combining a kindergarten and senior housing so that young children and old people can enjoy spending time together. This is what Kong Gauers Gård in the Danish village of Gauerslund is designed to do. The first of its kind in Denmark, this joint institution has been built to be socially, environmentally and financially sustainable – from the way it is designed to the materials used.
Rationel windows were selected for the building as they contribute to the sustainability goals of the project. Not only are they FSC-certified and triple glazed for energy efficiency, but their good insulation properties retain heat and contribute to a good indoor climate. Furthermore, the aluminium profile on the exterior of the window protects against the Danish winters, reducing maintenance and prolonging its lifetime.
The senior housing has 79 apartments of different sizes while the daycare centre has space for 120 children. Although the two institutions are separate, they share a large activity centre. This versatile space can be used by senior residents, children, visitors and local residents for a range of activities, such as bingo, creative workshops and markets.
The new institution was fully taken into use in 2024 and both generations are already feeling the benefits. From eating lunch together to taking part in music and singing, Kong Gauers Gård has improved quality of life for old and young and challenged convention in the way institutions are built.
