Energy savings of 95% in renovated 1970s office building
Using the innovative 2226 building concept, the 50-year-old Amber office building in Zurich has been renovated to make it more energy efficient. When the renovation is completed in 2025, it is expected to reduce energy consumption by an impressive 95%. EgoKiefer supplied windows to the project that play a key role in delivering these energy savings.
The 2226 concept was developed by the architects Baumschlager Eberle. The name comes from the ambient temperature of between 22° to 26° Celsius that buildings can maintain by using the heat sources already present, such as people, technical equipment and lighting, and by careful insulation of the walls.
In renovation projects, such as the Amber building, using the 2226 principles can significantly reduce the need for conventional heating, cooling and ventilation systems, while in new builds it can remove the need for these systems completely. EgoKiefer supplied Ego®Selection wood/ aluminium windows to the project. These windows are connected to sensors that monitor indoor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide content and energy consumption. As soon as the sensors detect deviations from the ideal condition, the 2226 software gives an impulse to open the window’s ventilation flaps to regulate fresh air supply. This innovative construction and specially automated narrow openings ventilate the building and help maintain consistent temperatures and a pleasant indoor environment.
Throughout Europe, architects and developers are showing increased interest in the 2226 concept for renovations and new builds because of the significant energy savings it can provide.
